Dramatic Bodycam Footage Shows Heroic Police Officer Saving A Choking 9-Month-Old Baby

Not all heroes wear capes, or so the cliché goes, but sometimes they do wear uniforms. At least, this was the case for one police officer whose heroic actions recently saved the life of a 9-month-old baby girl.

Southern California police officer Brian Cappell is receiving special honors for saving the life of a 9-month-old choking baby.

Last month, officer Cappell of the Culver City Police responded to a call of a baby choking nearby. Body camera footage from the officer shows Janet Lockridge’s 10-year-old daughter, Auria, leading Cappell to her mother’s car where her little sister, Harleigh, was choking.

Lockridge says she was driving down the road when Harleigh began choking on some food.

“She was struggling for air, she was struggling to breathe,” Lockridge told ABC News.

The dramatic clip shows officer Cappell reaching for the 9-month-old, holding her face down, and repeatedly slapping her on the back in order to dislodge the food blocking her airway.

“I reverted back to my training. We’ve been trained here when a child of that age is choking, put the face down and do some hard slaps to the back, for lack of a better word,” Cappell said.

Meanwhile, Lockridge prayed for her little one’s life.

“I was afraid,” she said. “I didn’t know what the outcome was going to be, and I was just praying the whole entire time.”

After several firm slaps to Harleigh’s back, she began crying and everyone was relieved.

“Once I heard the baby crying, it was thebest sound I ever heard in my life,” Cappell said.

Lockridge expressed her gratitude toward the officer, saying she is “indebted to him forever.”

The day following his life-saving actions, Cappell posed for a photo with little Harleigh who had since recovered.

The caption reads:

Officer Cappell saved this little girl’s life yesterday. She had choked on something and was unconscious and not breathing. He did CPR and saved her life…

On Monday, Cappell received special honors for his heroism.
