Back in March, celebrity show host Alex Trebek announced that he had stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Though his diagnosis seemed grim, the Jeopardy! star didn’t let the disease keep his spirits down. In fact, a recent update from Trebek revealed that his tumors have actually shrunk by 50 percent and doctors say he is near remission.
Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek just revealed that his cancerous tumors have shrunk by 50 percent.
Though his cancer typically has a 9% survival rate, Trebek seems to be fighting the odds.
According to People, the 78-year-old star says he’s responding well to chemotherapy.
“The doctors said they hadn’t seen this kind of positive result in their memory…some of the tumors have already shrunk by more than 50 percent,” Trebek said.
Doctors are shocked by Trebek’s improvement and say the host is in “near remission.” Of course, he isn’t quite in the clear yet.
The host will have to go through several more rounds of chemo in hopes of achieving full remission, but he is more than happy about his progress.
“They were tears of joy, not tears of depression,” Trebek said.
Trebek credits the success of his treatment to all of the supportive fans who have sent him well wishes.
“I’ve got a couple million people out there who have expressed their good thoughts, their positive energy directed towards me and their prayers,” he says. “I told the doctors, this has to be more than just the chemo, and they agreed it could very well be an important part of this.”
“I’ve got a lot of love out there headed in my direction and a lot of prayer, and I will never ever minimize the value of that.”
