9/11 Victim Fund Bill Gets Unanimous Approval After Jon Stewart’s Emotional Speech

Just yesterday we brought you the news of a Congressional hearing in which former Daily Show host and comedian Jon Stewart passionately chastised lawmakers for their treatment of 9/11 first responders, many of whom are facing grave health consequences as a result of their heroic actions at Ground Zero.

In a fiery and emotional speech, Stewart ripped into Congress for dragging its feet on passing a bill to permanently authorize the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund, for which funding was set to expire next year.

Stewart had called the state of affairs “an embarrassment to the country” and urged Congress to do their jobs, saying:

They did their jobs, with courage, grace, tenacity, humility..18 years later, do yours!”

Stewart’s passionate and masterful oratory resulted in more than a standing ovation however, as the bill was unanimously passed by the Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, just one day after Stewart’s speech went viral.

Even the conservative New York Post highlighted the famously liberal Stewart’s efforts with an all-caps cover quoting him, and directed at lawmakers, that read “SHAMEFUL.”

The bill will now go to the floor of the House of Representatives for a full vote where it is expected to pass. It will then be up to the Senate to make sure it becomes law.
