Recently, a peculiar looking bird paid a visit to a family in Newburgh, New York. The bird, looking a little worse for wear, landed on a young boy named Sam Esposito.
“We freaked out,” Sam’s dad Michael told Good News Network, “because we were all sitting outside and the bird flew right near our heads.”
Michael noticed the weary bird didn’t look like other birds in the area and turned to Facebook to see if it was a lost pet.
“We posted it on Facebook and a friend of ours 11 miles away knew the people in her town that had lost the bird four days previously,” Michael said.
It turns out the feathered friend was a pet cockatiel named “Cheesy” who had escaped from Michelle and Matt Napolitano, a family from Cornwall, New York which is roughly six miles away.
Cheesy had been flying four days and had lost about a third of its body weight, according to GNN, a veterinarian said Cheesy might not have lasted another day in the wild on his own. The Espositos reunited Cheesy with his family, and they were ecstatic to find out he was ok.
The Napolitanos offered the Espositos a $1,000 reward but they told them to pay it forward. In lieu of the reward, thee Napolitanos sent the family who rescued their bird some custom t-shirts emblazoned with “Cheese’s heroes.”
