13-Year-Old Starts Cupcake Business That Matches Every Sale With Donation To The Homeless

What’s that? Another brilliant and selfless kid is putting adults everywhere to shame?

Yep.

Michael Platt, of Washington DC, is only 13 years old but he’s been baking most of his life.

Two years ago, when he was 11, he decided to use his culinary talents to start a business called Michaels Desserts.

Not content with that precocious achievement, Michael decided the business would also operate as a charity to help the hungry. So Michael’s Desserts makes a donation to match every sale.

That means that every time a cupcake is sold, a cupcake is donated.

According to the Washington Post Platt has always had an interest in helping the needy and in baking. Now he’s combined his two passions into one ambitious project that is Michael’s Desserts.

Platt told the Post that he makes the donations by visiting shelters twice a month and enjoys giving kids cupcakes who might not be used to such a treat. He also said he deliberately left out the apostrophe in “Michaels Desserts” to remind himself that what he was doing wasn’t about him.

“I always wanted to have a purpose for what I do,” he said. “It’s all about helping people — not just having a purpose for yourself, but thinking about, ‘How does this touch other things?’ ”
