Timmy is a big fan of WWE and has a few replica championship belts that, according to his father, Tim Sr., he takes everywhere like a security blanket and even sleeps with. Knowing this, Timmy’s dad reached out to an artisan named Sergio Moreira who specializes in customizing replica wrestling belts and making them look like the real thing. In an act of generosity Moreira said he’d do the customization work on Timmy’s belts for free to help the suffering kid out and Tim Sr. mailed them along.
That’s when things got a lot less generous. Before Moreira could receive the package, two women stole the boxes from his porch. The theft was captured on his security camera.
Normally that’s where the story would end on a sad note, but this time something happened. Moreira went to the media, telling local station KIRO7 that h wanted the thieves to know the consequences of their actions, saying:
“I want them to know they took hope from a 5-year-old boy who is looking forward to that item coming back to him. You stole that from him. You broke a child’s heart.”
Moreira’s public shaming, combined with the release of his security footage, worked and two days later the thieves returned the package containing Timmy’s belts along with a 4-page apology, obtained by Yahoo Lifestyle, that read:
“We are so sorry for taking your stuff. Never in a million years would I have expected I would have stolen from a sick five year old. […] I have a 6 year old myself and am ashamed of what I did.”
The women explained that they are homeless and addicted to drugs and were desperate for money but expressed strong regret for their actions and promised to better themselves as individuals, saying:
“We never wanted to steal a child’s hope. […] After seeing ourselves looking like low lives on the news, we have both decided to get clean and sober.”
According to Moreira the women were crying and seemed genuinely remorseful when they returned the packages and he gave them a hug, informing them he wouldn’t be getting the police involved. Now he plans to soup up the belts and send them straight to Timmy, saying “Timmy will have a belt of a lifetime.”
Truly this is a story that went from inspiring to sad and back again.
