The 2019 graduating class of the Harlem Children’s Zone Promise Academy were probably more than a little excited to have musical icon Pharrell Williams as their graduation speaker, but they got an extra surprise when Williams offered them more than some wise words.
In a surprise announcement, the 10-time Grammy winner Pharrell offered all 114 high schoolers graduating from the New York charter school a summer internship.
As tension mounted Williams slowly drew it out, saying calmly:
“So let me be clear: For every member of the 2019 graduating class is guaranteed…an internship waiting for them…you…next summer.”
The students immediately rose to their feet cheering upon hearing the news.

We are in the midst of the new Harlem Renaissance with education at its core. Which is why I’ve promised an internship next summer for every student of the @hczorg Promise Academy #ClassOf2019, all of whom were accepted to college. ???????????????? pic.twitter.com/P9IcvVA69a
