Attempting to tackle any seemingly impossible task is difficult. A lot of the time, even just taking the first step feels like a lot. But, when there’s a big challenge ahead, often times all you can do is just take it one step at a time and do your best. That’s a life lesson that one overweight dog is teaching everyone.
A dog was going to be euthanized for being overweight. Instead, he lost over 100 pounds and is now a healthy and happy pup.
Kai the Golden Retriever was brought to the veterinarian to be euthanized because he was so heavy.
“This is the most overweight animal I have ever seen,” the vet said when he met 173-pound Kai. However, he knew that not all hope was lost, and that Kai just needed some care to help him get healthy.
The vet contacted Misfits of Alberta Animal Rescue and Pam Heggie started fostering Kai.
The vet told Heggie that even the littlest bit would help Kai. So they started with some small steps toward health – literally. When Kai first arrived at Heggie’s house, it took him 20 minutes just to climb the few steps to the front door, according to Good Morning America.
Kai and Heggie took each moment one at a time and appreciated each bit of progress along the way.
They went on walks three times a day. Sometimes the walks would just be to the next house over and back. “Literally, he went five to 10 steps, and then he would lay down and start panting,” Heggie explains to Good Morning America.
Heggie also took Kai to water therapy to help his muscles grow stronger.
Little by little, Kai gained stamina and strength. He also gained a great deal of trust in Heggie. “He learned that I was gonna help him and we were gonna be OK,” Heggie tells GMA.
Eventually, Kai shed over 100 pounds.
Now he can walk, run, and play just like any other dog. “I look at him and forget how broken he was. Now he’s just a regular dog doing regular dog things like everybody else,” Heggie says to GMA.
Heggie and Kai grew very close and Heggie adopted Kai so that he would always be in her family. Now, she thinks that his story can be an inspiration to everyone. She says:
He shows you how to do a really big task literally one day at a time. He doesn’t worry about yesterday, he doesn’t worry about tomorrow, he just focuses on what needs to be done today and he does it. We can learn a lot from dogs.
