After a mass shooting, it can be difficult to figure out how to best help. A lot of people feel powerless after such a tragic event. But it’s important to remember that even though we can’t change what happened, we can help by moving forward with some positive change. One celebrity is helping several communities do exactly that.
Lady Gaga is funding school projects in three towns where mass shootings recently took place.
Gaga has pledged to fund all school project needs in 162 classrooms in El Paso, Texas, Dayton, Ohio, and Gilroy, California.
On August 9, Gaga posted on Facebook and announced her plans to donate funds to schools in the impacted communities.
“My heart goes out to those who were taken from us too soon and to their families, loved ones, and communities who are left to grieve. Everyone has the right to laws that make them feel safe in their communities. In this moment, I want to channel my confusion, frustration, and fury into hope. Hope that we are there for each other and for ourselves.”
Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation is partnering with DonorsChoose.Org to fully fund projects in classrooms in the three cities.
Gaga also took the opportunity to encourage people to take care of their own mental health and the mental health of their loved ones.
“Surviving and recovering from these tragedies also means prioritizing your mental health and checking in on your loved ones. If you’re struggling, please be brave and tell a trusted someone. Don’t be scared to ask for help, I beg you. If you see a loved one struggling, please be brave and reach out, remind them it’s ok to not be ok, and listen to them. We cannot turn away from ourselves. We cannot turn away from our loved ones. We need each other. Don’t turn away.”
She ended her post by honoring the memories of the lives lost in shootings in Dayton, OH, El Paso, TX, and Gilroy, CA that took place during the week of July 28.
