It was just last week that the world learned the story of Antonio Basco, a grieving Texas man who lost his wife of 22 years, Margie Reckard, in the El Paso shooting that claimed 22 lives.
When Basco offered an open invitation to his wife’s funeral the world responded overwhelmingly as strangers far and wide were moved by Basco’s enormous loss and over 1,000 people came to grieve with him.
Now, according to BuzzFeed News, Basco has been faced with another hardship. His car was stolen and wrecked just one day after his wife’s funeral.
According to BuzzFeed the Ford Escape had belonged to Basco’s wife and was the same vehicle he slept in while holding vigil outside the Walmart where his wife was killed.
Vanessa Kondow posted the news of the theft to an El Paso Facebook group, along with a photo, writing “WTF is wrong with people!?”
“Mr. Antonio Basco’s vehicle was stolen and wrecked last night. My husband towed it back to his house this morning. WTF is wrong with people!? He just buried his wife yesterday and now this sh*t. This is the same vehicle CASA just completely serviced and repaired for him. He told my husband that whoever took it also stole a pressure washing machine from a small trailer he used to use for mobile car washing.”
People were rightly outraged that yet another misfortune was being heaped upon the already suffering Basco but luckily, just as it did before, the community stepped up to help one of its own.
The local car dealership that had recently serviced Basco’s vehicle before it was stolen has now presented him with a brand new SUV.
In video captured by the Casa Ford, Basco can be seen accepting the gift of the new vehicle.

It’s certainly something worth smiling about that in the wake of such tragedies people keep coming together to help those who have lost so much in any way they can.
