Cancer is a terrible illness that affects millions of Americans, with roughly 1,735,350 new cases being diagnosed in 2018 alone. Whether we’ve experienced it ourselves or had a loved one who’s battled the disease, cancer touches us all on some level. And while facing breast cancer is scary, to say the least, Charlie Johnson and her partner Kelsey managed to turn it into something beautiful.

With the help of photographer Mandy Parks, the Johnsons chose to document Charlie’s battle with breast cancer by creating a beautiful photoshoot out of her decision to shave her head before treatment. Throughout the series of images, the couple displays their deep love and support as well as their bravery as they embark on this mission to eradicate the illness.

As Parks shared on her Facebook page, “Strong women aren’t simply born. They are made by the storms they walk through. From the pain, mistakes, and heartache we achieve pride and strength. I don’t know who needs to see this today. Or yesterday. Or someone you know might get this phone call tomorrow. Show them what strength looks like. Let them know they are not alone. Stand by them as they kick this like the warrior they are!”

“Thank you to Charlie Johnson and Kelsey Johnson for allowing me to capture the pain, beauty and bravery it took to spread this message. Prayers to you both in the fight! I love you guys! Thank you to Whitney Wyatt for being there alongside us for the beautiful hair and makeup!”

TGN reached out to Parks via Facebook to ask her how the photoshoot came about and how it felt to be able to take part in such a special moment between the Johnsons.

“When we starting putting this session together I just wanted to take something so sad and try to make it beautiful,” she explained. “Charlie is a true hero and she deserves every ounce of credit.”

Frankly, we couldn’t agree more.
