Generally you don’t know when a plumber is going to show up and you don’t know what he’s going to charge. That’s not the case with James Anderson, a 52-year-old plumber from the United Kingdom who has made his prices, for certain customers, quite clear:

In a note to his staff Anderson wrote a total balance due of 0.00 pounds sterling for a 91-year-old woman suffering from leukemia and the following message:

“No charge for this lady under any circumstances. We will be available 24 hour to help her and keep her as comfortable as possible.”

A photo of that invoice has since gone viral as people have reacted to James’ kindness towards the old and unwell.

According to Metro Anderson didn’t expect the enormous reaction the photo has received, saying: “We didn’t expect it. It’s been everywhere.”

Anderson decided to turn his plumbing business into a nonprofit called Depher two years ago. Now, instead of charging elderly clients he instead raises money via crowdfunding, with the stated mission: “Depher CIC is HERE to stop the suffering & dying of the elderly and disabled who are left alone in the COLD without any financial help.”

Anderson says the switch to a nonprofit has caused him to run up a debt close to $10,000 but that he doesn’t care, saying:

“We didn’t expect it. It’s been everywhere.”

‘To me, debt is debt… I would rather owe some money to somebody and another person be alive and happy and safe.”

Metro also reports that Anderson was inspired to start the nonprofit when he witnessed an old man being treated poorly by a worker. Now he’s doing his part, one 0 dollar invoice at a time, because as he puts it:

“It’s an ethos that’s in my heart and it will always stay there.”

Anderson is even hoping to expand the program nationally, stating that he sees helping the old and sick stay warm in the winter as a moral imperative, saying:

“I don’t want any person who is elderly and disabled in this country, in this day and age, to die or suffer because of a cold home or a lack of funding to repair the boiler.”

“It shouldn’t be happening – that number should be down to zero. Simple as that.”
