One football fan recently proved that he’s a fan of helping others, too. He’s using some newfound fame to spread his goodwill.
A football fan asked for beer money and now he’s raised over $1 million for a children’s hospital.
On Sept. 14, Carson King attended ESPN’s “College Gameday” in Ames, Iowa. The sports channel was broadcasting the events ahead of the football game between the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Iowa State Cyclones. While the cameras captured in him in the crowd, King held up a sign that read “Busch Light Supply Needs Replenished: along with his Venmo account name.
“I didn’t think I would make anything, it all started as a joke,” King told CNN. But, it turns out a whole lot came out of it.
Within 30 minutes, King received $400 in his Venmo account.
He talked it over with his family and decided that he would use the money to buy one case of Busch Light beer. The rest of the money would go to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
King’s plan to donate the money to the children’s hospital spread and more and more people continued to contribute.
With all the donations my @CollegeGameDay sign for @BuschBeer has received, I will be donating all but enough for a case of Busch Light to @uiowa Children’s Hospital. We’re at over $1,600.00 right now! @CycloneATH @WideRtNattyLt @ChrisMWilliams Venmo Carson-King-25

Busch Beer and Venmo hear about King’s generous plans. Both companies agreed to match the donations.
.@CarsonKing2 this is the best thing we have read all year, we’re inspired.
We’re going to match your donation to University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, and we’ll throw in some of that Busch Light you were looking for. https://t.co/NPPrPp6zJg

By Sunday, Sept. 22, King had raised a total of $1 million.
King plans to keep the Venmo account open and accepting donation through the end of September. In addition to the joy of raising money for a good cause, King is also receiving a year’s supply of beer from Busch and has been dubbed an “Iowa Legend.”
Hey @CarsonKing2, we said we’d send you a year’s worth of Busch Light, but first we had to make sure the cans were fit for a King. Let us know where to send the truck. #IowaLegend pic.twitter.com/czGBuXRE92

The University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital is celebrating all the support they’ve received.

On Twitter, they wrote, “What a week! We are overwhelmed by all of your generosity, and our hearts are full.”
Since there’s still about a week left in September, there’s still time for King’s campaign to grow even more.
