Quick-Thinking Bystander Saves Pup From Being Smooshed In Elevator

Elevators and escalators can be terrifying. I know a good number of folks whose worst nightmare is being trapped in an elevator, and as a child, I had a strange fear of being sucked under the last escalator stair. So imagine a dog whose leash has been caught in the elevator door. A bad situation right? That’s exactly what happened in Texas this week. And the scary moment was caught on camera.

In the footage, a woman with her leashed Pomeranian is waiting for the elevator. As the door opens, the dog begins to follow the woman inside but stops just short of the door. Then the door closes, with the other end of the leash inside.

Luckily, a quick-thinking bystander was right there and ready to act to save the dog. Johnny Mathis had just stepped off of the same elevator and saw the potential accident waiting to happen.

“There was so much fur, that’s why it took me a bit to get that lever off of the collar,” Mathis told CNN. “And when I did, I let go, you could see that leash just shoot off to the top of the elevator.”

Mathis wrote on Twitter that the woman was screaming as soon as the door closed, adding that she “was bawling her eyes out when it came back down, she thought the worst.”

Folks are criticizing the woman for being careless with her pup, but accidents happen, and we should just focus on the fact that the dog is okay.

“I did what I had to do to help the pup,” Mathis tweeted. “I’m thankful I was there at the right time to help.”
