An elderly woman named Bernice from Alberquerque, New Mexico was just trying to get in touch with the medical supply store. Instead, she called the Bernalillo County District Attorney. In fact, she mistakenly called the attorney’s office a few times all in an effort to purchase a new walker. Someone from the office called her to try to straighten out the situation and instead of giving up on her, they decided to help her out. Bernice called the wrong number and was surprised with a new walker.
DA office agent Kyle Hartstock explained to KRQE that when he and his team got a hold of Bernice on the phone, “she said, ‘I’m just trying to get ahold of anybody with a walker.'”
When they heard her simple request, the people of the office decided to pool their money and resources to make it happen for her. “We might have purchased three walkers before we got it right, but we got it right,” Hartstock said.
On Tuesday, Dec. 10, eight employees from the DA’s office arrived at Bernice’s house to personally deliver a new walker to her. Not only did they bring it to her, but they also all chipped in to pay for it for her, refusing to accept any money when she offered to pay them back.
Bernice wanted to get a walker in time to attend her grandson’s wedding. If she didn’t get one, she was considering skipping the wedding. Luckily, her friends at the DA’s office stepped in. Now, Bernice and the DA agents are planning to keep in touch, so Bernice got both a new walker and some new friends.
