This Store Is Handing Out Free Food For Solving Math Problems, And No You Can’t Use A Calculator

A New York City bodega is doing its part to feed the hungry while also stressing the importance of math. In a novel approach to customer satisfaction Lucky Candy, a convenience store and deli in the Bronx, has set up a simple challenge: If customers can solve a math problem, they get a free snack.

If you’re suddenly wishing you’d paid more attention in school, you’re not alone.

The game is the brainchild of Ahmed Alwan, a 20-year old student who works at Lucky Candy as a cashier.

For the numerically-inclined it’s a pretty darn good deal. According to CNN if patrons can solve a math equation Alwan gives them 5 seconds to grab whatever they want from the store. And, as anyone who grew up watching Supermarket Sweep knows, that’s plenty of time to score some sweet prizes.

In one video of the challenge, which has since gone viral, Alwan does add the caveat that players can’t take his cat as their prize but appears unfazed when a man solves the problem and then cheekily selects an entire rack of nuts as his winnings.

Speaking to CNN, Alwan said:

“All I wanted to do was to help people. But I wanted to make it fun. So I made a TikTok and chose a challenge, asking them a math question. It’s a way to entertain and educate people in need while putting a smile on their face, too.”

Alwan’s TikTok videos, which now total over a dozen, have quickly gained him a large following of 400,000 viewers (along with another 20,000 on Instagram) who follow along with his funny interactions with his customers.

It’s clear Alwan has a good rapport with his patrons and after they get a question right they scramble around the store grabbing all their favorite snacks while he good-naturedly (and slowly) counts down the seconds until they make it back to the register with their spoils. It’s a funny and heartwarming scene, all made possible by Alwan’s clever and kind-hearted idea.

Of course it’s possible Alwan has just found an ingenious way to get people to do his math homework for him but we’re going to assume his intentions are pure.
