Trash TV: Garbage Man Wows “American Idol” Judges

One of the latest American Idol hopefuls is a garbage collector from Mobile, Alabama whose only previous experience was singing on the back of his sanitation truck. And now, thanks to his talent, Doug Kiker is going to Hollywood.

Kiker got his ticket from panelists Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan in Sunday’s season premiere. But it wasn’t all smooth sailing. Kiker was nervous at first, and Richie asked him to warm up outside and then come back. Then, Kiker returned and wowed everyone with his rendition of Rascal Flatt’s “Bless the Broken Road.”

Bryan then joined him on piano to get more range from the 27-year-old, who killed it.

“There’s so much in there,” Bryan said.

Bryan shared the experience on his Twitter, saying, “Always willing to jump behind the piano and help a buddy out. We will see you in Hollywood!”

“Hey, Doug, that wasn’t garbage,” Perry said. “That was greatness.”

Kiker said he wanted to show his 2-year-old daughter there’s “nothing you can’t do.”

Good luck, Doug!
