During my time volunteering at an animal shelter, it was always heartbreaking to see animals linger for longer than they should. I got used to seeing certain types of dogs snapped up quickly and others patiently wait for years until finding their forever home. But whenever those patient dogs got adopted, it felt so, so good. And that’s what happened at the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City last week, when Merrick, a dog who had been waiting more than five years for a home, was finally adopted.
Merrick had been featured in social media campaigns and billboards, desperately trying to inspire potential adopters. And the plan worked—his new owner Jordan Nussbaum, saw Merrick and went to adopt him.
“It was love at first sight,” Nussbaum, who adopted the dog along with his girlfriend Amy, told KMBC. “What they wanted was…someone without kids who had a lot of energy to keep up with him because he’s a large dog.”
Daily talks with Daddy are the best! Especially when it’s about car rides, walks, and fetch! #notinthatorderthough #fetchislife🐶🎾
“Our sweet boy Merrick has been ADOPTED after living with us for 5 years,” the shelter wrote on their Facebook page.

“Merrick found his perfect match—his new mom and dad, Jordan and Amy, are everything he has wished for and more! We could not be more happy, excited, proud, or thankful to everyone who shared his story.”
Nussbaum added: “I just seem like I was destined to be with him.”
Merrick has his own Facebook page now, so you can follow him on all his new adventures!
