These Brew Dogs Are Delivering Beer (And Smiles) During Quarantine

brew dogs

With most of the country still on lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, many bars, restaurants, breweries, and distilleries have resorted to contactless pickup and delivery to stay in business while continuing to serve their loyal customers. Typically, these deliveries involve masked personnel quickly doing the handoff, which—though, rather cold and sterile—is necessary for the safety of both the drivers and clientele.

Enter Buddy and Barley. These two very good boys live with their mom and dad, Karen and Mark Heuwetter, at Six Harbors Brewing Company in Huntington, on Long Island, New York, where they serve as resident brew dogs.

Since quarantine began, Buddy and Barley have been helping Mark and Karen make beer runs, complete with (empty) beer cans that they wear proudly on their neck—much like you’d see a St. Bernard doing with whiskey barrels in old-timey cartoons!

In a recent interview with CBS This Morning: Saturday, Mark said that he and his wife initially didn’t know what would happen to their business when the coronavirus pandemic hit.

“Buddy and Barley are superstars in the town of Huntington,” Karen Heuwetter told co-host, Dana Jacobson. “They have been requested in many cases, and we are making it well known that they can deliver beer to your house.”

“When they go out and make people smile, I think people really like that,” added Karen. “In fact, people need that these days, so when they put a smile on people’s faces they’re doing their job—which, by nature, is easy for them.”

And it’s not hard to see why people love the pups so much!

Until just last year, Buddy had been an “only dog,” before the couple adopted Barley as a puppy, and, as they say, the rest was history.

Though Buddy, at least, already has a brew named after him, maybe the couple could take things a step further by putting their dogs’ faces on the beer cans after this is all over.

These good boys certainly deserve it!
