Rachel Chapman’s senior prom was canceled due to COVID-19, so 7-year-old Curtis Rogers surprised his babysitter with dinner and a dance.
“I was so surprised,” Rachel told Good Morning America, “I had no idea he was going to go all out. It was very thoughtful and sweet.”
Rachel is a senior at Sanderson High School in Raleigh, North Carolina, and due to the pandemic, all senior events were canceled for the class of 2020.
Rachel had been babysitting Curtis part-time for over a year, but had to stop seeing him as well, in response to the coronavirus.
“She has become a part of our family … he absolutely adores her,” Curtis’ mom, Elissa Rogers, told GMA.
”She’s a just great person with a good heart so it’s been a blessing to have her helping us out with Curtis.”
When Rogers told Curtis that Rachel wouldn’t be able to watch him for some time and that she couldn’t even have a prom, Curtis said, “We can throw a mini prom.”
Rogers says the idea grew from there.
Curtis enlisted his mom to help throw the event in their backyard.
“I planned it out because Rachel probably just wanted to see me a lot and she is one of the best people I’ve known,” he told local media.
The 7-year-old dressed in a suit and created a menu of Rachel and his favorite foods that they’d enjoyed together: peanut butter and apples as an appetizer, smoothies for dessert, and Chick-fil-A as a main course.
Curtis and his babysitter hadn’t seen each other for nearly two months, and the mini prom reunion was too cute. Rachel’s mom shared photos of the event on Facebook:

When Rachel arrived, the young gentleman toasted his babysitter. They used a six-foot pool noodle and jump ropes to maintain social distance.
And they danced!
