North Carolina high school student, Catherine-Sofia Dols, generously shared her coming out with the world via TikTok— and did it with cupcakes.
When she felt ready to come out to her mom as a gay woman, Catherine-Sofia applied her passion for vegan baking and used the cupcakes to spell it out. “I like girls,” they said, in piped icing.
“I thought that it would be really personal for me to do it that way,” Catherine-Sofia told BuzzFeed.
She surprised her mom with the baked treats and recorded the whole interaction on a video that has since gone viral on TikTok, racking up 4.3 million views.

When her mom realized the cute cupcakes had a message to convey, she looked at her daughter and said, smiling, “… I kinda knew that,” and folded her into a warm, proud hug.
Then, to be sure they were clear, her mom asked, “Sexually?”
Catherine-Sofia answered simply, “Yeah.”
Mom’s response was an amused, “Really?!” as she headed back toward the kitchen.
Catherine-Sofia’s smile as she turns to cut the camera is priceless. She told Buzzfeed how she felt about the internet’s reaction to her coming out.
“I was actually really surprised at how much positivity I got,” she said.
“A lot of comments were of people telling me that they wish their parents would react the way my mom did, and it really saddens me to know that there are kids out there or even adults out there who get disowned from their own family.”
“I felt really comforted about her reaction and I felt like she was a really good mom for already knowing,” Catherine-Sofia said. “I felt accepted.”
May all parents of LGBTQ kids be so chill and accepting, and celebrate their child’s journey to becoming who they are.
