There are lots of stories about landlords being stingy or evasive or not repairing the shower for three months. But for seven students in Leeds, that could not be further from the truth. The students, who had lived in the same apartment for three years, were getting ready to move out—and their landlord gave them a 20% bonus when returning their deposits. Now, folks on social media are applauding the landlord’s kindness.
Maisie, a 22-year old psychology student at the University of Leeds, posted a screenshot on Twitter sharing the text message that her landlord, John, sent to all his departing tenants.
“As a thank you, I have added a small bonus of £50 to each of your deposits making it £300 and now the shops are opening again I hope you’ll be able to buy yourself something nice. You have all been excellent tenants.”
The tweet received over 265,000 likes.
“We lived at the house for three years and it was really nice, we never had any problems. If we did, John did everything he could to fix it,” Maisie said.
“I’m just amazed by the amount of likes the tweet has got. It’s important for people to be aware that there are good landlords too,” she added, also including a tweet to the thread that calls for more landlords to be like John.
John spoke to Leeds Live about the viral tweet, saying of his former tenants: “I wish them well in the future. If they carry on how they did in my house they will be fine people.”
