People all over the world have been moved by the story of a son who would not give up on his sick, elderly mother who’d been diagnosed with COVID-19 while suffering from leukemia.
Denied entry to the hospital due to safety precautions put in place to contain the virus, Palestinian man Jihad Al-Suwaiti refused to give up on his mother.
Jihad, 30, climbed the pipeline on the exterior of his mother’s hospital building nightly, so he could perch at her window and watch over her.
Jihad’s brother, Abang Jihad, Rasmi told the media his brother found a way to see his mother even when hospital regulations wouldn’t allow it because he absolutely refused to let her suffer alone.
A representative of the hospital commented, “He spent most of his day there, observing his mother’s condition from outside the window, before coming down when he was convinced that his mother was fast asleep.”
Jihad made the climb every night until his mother, Rasma Salama, passed away last Thursday.
Safaa Odah, a cartoonist from Gaza, made this image in tribute to the mother and son:

My heart is full reading this. Lost my Mom (not to COVID) just before lockdown. Had she not died, I'd have certainly driven 2 1/2 hours to stand outside her window at her LTC residence, just so she could see I was there. This young man personifies the definition of a good son.— Nora (Cassidy) Tyll (@Nora1968) July 18, 2020
And many have shared personal stories in support of Jihad as he grieves the loss of his mother.

It's hurt, really hurt
This years is 2years my mom passed away, and it's still hurts me, I cry when I miss her.
Allah please take her to the best place you have. She's d best of me
It's been 4 years since I lost my Mom and 7 months since I lost my father. Nobody prepares you for being an adult orphan. I feel untethered, in the worst way possible.— Darisha Sims (@darsims3) July 20, 2020
Palestine has confirmed nearly 10,000 coronavirus cases to date, and according to The Palestine Institute for Public Diplomacy the country is currently experiencing its highest virus-related death rate since the pandemic began.
The realness of the #COVID19 is hitting #Palestine. Jihad Jihad used to sit by his mother's hospital window as she battled the virus. She died yesterday. At least 54 deaths & 8,616 cases have been reported in Palestine, the highest number yet. pic.twitter.com/7P79tv65Dc— ThePIPD (@ThePIPD) July 17, 2020
