Man Climbs Two Stories Nightly To Watch Over Mom With COVID From Outside Her Hospital Window

People all over the world have been moved by the story of a son who would not give up on his sick, elderly mother who’d been diagnosed with COVID-19 while suffering from leukemia.

Denied entry to the hospital due to safety precautions put in place to contain the virus, Palestinian man Jihad Al-Suwaiti refused to give up on his mother.

Jihad, 30, climbed the pipeline on the exterior of his mother’s hospital building nightly, so he could perch at her window and watch over her.

Jihad’s brother, Abang Jihad, Rasmi told the media his brother found a way to see his mother even when hospital regulations wouldn’t allow it because he absolutely refused to let her suffer alone.

A representative of the hospital commented, “He spent most of his day there, observing his mother’s condition from outside the window, before coming down when he was convinced that his mother was fast asleep.”

Jihad made the climb every night until his mother, Rasma Salama, passed away last Thursday.

Safaa Odah, a cartoonist from Gaza, made this image in tribute to the mother and son:

People on social media are touched by the son who wouldn’t give up hope for his mother’s recovery…

And many have shared personal stories in support of Jihad as he grieves the loss of his mother.

Palestine has confirmed nearly 10,000 coronavirus cases to date, and according to The Palestine Institute for Public Diplomacy the country is currently experiencing its highest virus-related death rate since the pandemic began.
