A Texas couple has defied the odds together, overcoming coronavirus, cancer and finishing chemo.
Janice and Robert Beecham have been married for 46 years and are thankful to be recovering from some recent health issues.
“It’s a blessing to be here because a lot of people didn’t make it,” Janice told CNN.
Robert said he and his wife had been following safety precautions, but he began to experience some symptoms of COVID-19. When he still felt sick a week and a half later, the couple got tested for the virus. The following day, Robert called his son who urged him to go to the hospital.
“He knew me agreeing without a fight meant that I was feeling pretty terrible,” he said.
Robert was taken to Parkland Hospital in Dallas and the next day found out he tested positive for COVID-19. Staff moved him to another floor of the facility to continue treatment, where he stayed for nearly a month. Robert credits his doctor, Satyam Nayak, for keeping spirits high on the long road to recovery.
“Dr. Nayak and I would open up casual conversations and it would take my mind off the virus,” he said.
In their conversations, Robert told Dr. Nayak that he had suffered two strokes, one in 2012 and another in 2016, and he’d missed his wedding anniversary. For a while it seemed like Robert might miss another, but the doctor made sure to get him home in time to celebrate another year with his high school sweetheart.
Nayak came up with a plan that made it possible for Robert to go home and receive the care he needed from his wife. And before the day of their 46th wedding anniversary, the couple was reunited.
During this time, Janice had been dealing with some health issues of her own. She was still recovering from surgery in February after being newly diagnosed with ovarian cancer and being diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time. She also tested positive for coronavirus, but luckily her symptoms were mild.
“Once I got home, and we did the quarantine, I was getting progressively better but Janice still had issues with her health,” Robert said.
“We’re best friends, it was just tough.”
Now after two surgeries, two coronavirus diagnoses, chemo and remission, the Beecham family can finally close the chapter on a spring full of turmoil.
“It would have been impossible to make it with all the odds against you without God, and he has been our help, all these many years,” Robert said.
Janice is preparing for preventative radiation treatment, but this couple has already proven that together they can endure anything.
