A world without homework seems like a dream. For Courtney White’s students, a homework-free life is reality.
The Texas high school teacher recently went viral on TikTok for admitting she doesn’t assign homework to her students.
The video received 1.6 million views, 441.4K likes and a lot of comments, ranging from people who want White for their teacher to people appalled she would make that decision.
White noticed one comment in particular, criticizing her for how she teaches.
This comment prompted White to create a response video, which got even more attention than her original one. She captioned it with “Me not assigning homework, doesn’t make me any less of a teacher. My kids show me mastery of content in class.”

“There’s no proof that homework is going to make them better students in my class,” she said in the video. “I respect their time outside of class, they work hard for me all day, they don’t need to go home and do more homework.”
She goes on to explain how homework can be practice, but only if the students are doing it correctly. That is, not cheating, not having someone else do it for them and all the other ways kids skirt responsibilities.
“Most of my students are high schoolers. They have jobs, they have FFA, they have sports, they’re in practice, they’re in band, they have other responsibilities outside of school. They’re going home to take care of their younger siblings because their parents are at work. Some of them just need to go home and sleep. Some of them have to go home and worry about what they’re going to eat because there’s no food at their house.”
And with many schools doing in-person learning during A PANDEMIC, the last thing students need to worry about is homework.
“If I give them hours of homework, when do they have time to be kids?”
