The Rock Surprises Friend Who Took Him In As Homeless Teen With A New Truck

Dwyane “The Rock” Johnson, just named the “Most Likable Person in the World” by The Profile, exhibited some of that character by honoring one of the most important people in his life with a brand new truck—and captured it on Instagram to help tell the formative story.

Johnson documented his gift-giving—and more importantly, his reasons for it—in a recent Instagram post.

In it, he details how he came to know and live with Bruno Lauer, the man he calls “Downtown Bruno.”

“My mom and I were evicted off the island of Hawaii and I was sent to Nashville, Tennessee to live with my dad,” Johnson wrote in the post.

“When I landed in Nashville, I quickly found out I wasn’t gonna live with my dad. Shit happens, plans change and that’s the way it goes. Instead, I told I was gonna live with a guy named Bruno. Who at the time lived in a tiny room at a spot called the Alamo Plaza motel. Bruno could’ve (and should’ve) said hell no, I’m not takin’ in some kid who I don’t know.”

“But he didn’t,” Johnson remarked. “He took this punk kid in and we became lifelong friends.”

The video fills in some of the details of how the two men grew their friendship over the years, including Bruno lending The Rock $40 to buy his first car at 15, sold for that low, low price by “a crackhead,” and The Rock coming to live with Bruno again seven years later when he was starting his pro wrestling career.

Johnson characterized the gift of a brand-new truck as “returning the favor” for helping him get his not-as-nice first car, but also as a gesture of gratitude for exhibiting kindness throughout his life.
