Pizza Hut delivery worker Robert Peters desperately needed to replace his 28-year old Oldsmobile. Peters has been delivering pies for the pizza chain for 31 years and is better known as “Mister Smiley” around the town of Tipton, Indiana.
Now the Tipton community is giving back to the man who has delivered so much impact.
Tanner Langley, 28, a customer of the Tipton Pizza Hut said he and his family have been getting deliveries from Peters since he was a child. During one of his recent deliveries, Peters casually mentioned to Langley about the condition of his car.
Langley hatched a plan to provide the hometown hero with the new vehicle he needed, starting a GoFundMe fundraiser with the hopes to raise $12,000. Within days, donations surpassed that goal and $18,000 was collected.
In January, Peters was surprised by Langley with a new vehicle—a cherry red 2017 Chevy Malibu. The car’s registration, insurance, and taxes were covered, and a $500 gas card and a generous thank-you tip from the neighborhood were included too.
Langley shared with Good Morning America that the delivery driver was in shock saying, “He couldn’t express how appreciative he was to the community for what they had done.”
Mister Smiley won’t forget how his community came together for him.
“I just hope that all those who made this happen will be blessed as much as they have blessed me. This has really been an awesome experience that I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”Robert Peters, AKA Mister Smiley
