Florida Man Thumbs Gator In The Eye To Save His Puppy From Becoming Lunch

Usually when “Florida Man” is trending, it’s not a good thing. This time, while still strange and unusual, this is actually good news.

When Mike McCoy of Holiday, Florida noticed that his 8-month-old chocolate lab was dragged into a pond by an 8-foot alligator, he went into panic mode.

McCoy, with no hesitation, dived into the pond and wrestled with the beast to save his dog.

Luckily, in true Florida Man fashion, McCoy knew exactly what to do to go head-to-head with the reptile.

“I got around, thumbed him in the eye, picked him out of the water so he couldn’t get anywhere until he let the dog go.”

During the tussle, the alligator bit McCoy. Both the man and dog needed stitches, but neither were seriously injured. Jake has some bald patches on his body and head, and has to wear a cone so he doesn’t lick his wounds. McCoy proudly told ABC Action News of Jake’s current condition and said, “He’s on the mend.”

The incident occurred at a pond located behind a middle school, so teacher Kellie Mallon witnessed the whole event. She described the gator as a “snake” that was “darting really fast.”

It was a school nurse who first tended to McCoy’s wounds.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission is now working to trap the alligator.
