Landon Melvin, 9, was cleaning out the family van when he came across $5,000 underneath the floor mat.
The little boy ran to tell his dad about the mysterious package full of money, and his dad shrugged it off, figuring that the youngster was just being playful.
Dad Michael Melvin admitted to WRTV, “I was like, ‘Whatever.’ He’s nine. I’m like, ‘Yeah, you found something, OK.’”
His son eventually convinced his dad to take a look at his findings. While dad was expecting to find old paperwork, instead he found cold, hard cash, just like his son said.
The Melvin family has only owned the SUV since September, so they knew that the considerable amount of money didn’t belong to them.
Michael Melvin shared with the local news affiliate that they never considered keeping the cash for themselves.
He said, “It never crossed my mind. I immediately thought, ‘I need to find out who this belongs to.”
The Melvins made an effort to track down the former owners of the vehicle. Eventually, they discovered the South Carolina family and returned the money.
The previous owners had taken a trip to Florida for a cruise, and had misplaced the stashed cash. They were extremely grateful to have the money returned to their possession and insisted that 9-year-old Landon Melvin keep $1,000 of the money.
At the moment, Melvin is unsure of how he wants to spend the reward and insists that his mom is keeping the money in a safe place, not underneath any floor mats.
